In this transparent blog we explain “Why isn’t my CCTV camera working? How to fix your CCTV system”
Check the camera that’s not working
If the CCTV camera clearly has signs of water damage in the lens, this has likely short circuited the camera causing it to stop working.
A replacement camera would be needed to fix the issue.
Verify POE Ports are working
Ensure that all POE ports are working. Switches and NVR’s usually have LED indicators that show network connectivity.
If the power and data LEDs aren’t flashing that means there could be a problem with the port on the switch or NVR.
Confirm that the camera is plugged into a POE capable switch or NVR rather than a non-POE switch or NVR.

Check the camera power supply (PSU)
If your system isn’t using a POE capable switch or NVR it will likely be using a dedicated power supply.
Check the power supply using a multi meter to confirm it is running the correct voltage.
Replacing the power supply might fix the issue.
Check coax cable
If your system is analogue make a coax cable patch lead and plug the camera directly in to the recorder.
This is the best way to check if the coax cable is damaged.
Check the cable using a cable tester
Use a cable tester to plug in to both ends of the RJ45 port at either end of the cable.
Cable testers usually have a cable scanning function in order to ensure you are plugged in to both ends of the correct cable.
The cable tester will be able to detect if any of the cores in the CAT5e or CAT6 cable are broken.
Use CMD to Ping the Camera

Knowing your camera’s IP address is crucial for network troubleshooting. Once you have the IP address, you can use the Command Prompt to ping the camera.
Type ‘CMD’ in the Windows search bar to open the Command Prompt.
In the Command Prompt, type ‘ping [IP address]’ – t and press Enter.
Analyse the results. If you see ‘Request Time Out’ or ‘Destination Host Unreachable’, check if your device is on the same network as the camera. If your camera responds, try connecting to it through your web browser.
Check your NVR is on the correct IP range
If you have recently changed your router or changed internet service provider your NVR might not be set up on the correct IP range.
You can check the IP range of your network by typing in “ipconfig /all” in CMD then go in to your NVR settings and check it is on the correct IP range.
an example of a wrong IP range would show as follows.
“ipconfig /all” states your IP address is 192.168.1.200” but on your NVR settings it states “10.1.1.15”
You would need to scan the 192 range to find a free IP address, then add the recorder to the new IP range.
Double-Check Username and Password details
Incorrect login credentials are a common cause of connectivity issues.
If you can ping the camera and it shows it is on the network but can’t log in, check the username and password.
Consult the company that installed the system for more information.
Avoid IP Conflicts
Each camera must have a unique IP address to function correctly. Duplicate IP addresses will cause conflicts, making it impossible to access the camera.
Disconnect the camera from the network.
Then scan your network using a tool like “Angry IP” to check if another device is using the same IP address as the one your CCTV camera is using.
Update the Firmware
Outdated firmware can lead to various issues, including connectivity problems.
Check for firmware updates on the manufacturers website.
Installing the latest updates can resolve bugs and improve performance.
Sometimes installing a new CCTV camera on an old NVR will cause incompatibility issues, sometimes the only way to fix the issue is to replace the NVR for a new model.
Reboot the Camera
A reboot can solve temporary glitches. Power off the camera for 20 – 30 seconds before turning it back on. This simple step can refresh the system and resolve minor issues.
Reboot the NVR
Just like rebooting a camera, rebooting the NVR sometimes fixes the issue.
Perform a Factory Reset
We will not be held responsible if you delete important data and footage from your NVR. A factory reset can resolve issues but will erase all settings and recordings.
